Like “John Wick, ” its action is juiced by the killing of a dog; unlike that movie, its titular character (played by the likable Terry Crews) is stoically disinclined to vengeance. A gentle giant with shoulders like an ox, he’s so determined to escape his gangbanging past that when he finally lumbers into action, his weapon of choice is a sledgehammer, not a gun. And his first victim is a car windshield. The plot — which distractedly follows John Henry’s attempts to protect a Honduran woman from his former gang — is burlesque and the dialogue is a trip. Ken Foree, as John Henry’s salty, disabled father, has a blast delivering a sentimental paean to his character’s once-legendary penis, and a pair of bangers debate the relative merits of being the front, back or center victim in “The Human Centipede. ” Gritty home video from the 1990s outlining John Henry’s back story interweaves with scenes of bad guys talking trash and playing cards, while dazed-looking women hang out in the background like dessert. For some reason, all the gang members wear impractical snow-white sweatsuits, probably to enhance our appreciation of the gore when they inevitably get plugged. Set in South Los Angeles, this first feature from Will Forbes is a big slice of ham. The occasional witty line must fight to the death with a soundtrack that flips from flamenco guitars to hustling rap, depending on which ethnicity is onscreen, and ends with a spaghetti-western flourish. Yet the finale — featuring a villain (Chris Bridges, better known as the rapper Ludacris) with a golden bar fused to his jawbone — isn’t nearly as surreal as John Henry’s mid-movie drugstore slow dance with an old flame. He’s there to purchase tampons, but, honestly, you don’t need to know. John Henry Rated R for blood spraying and head smashing. Running time: 1 hour 31 minutes.

(Here"s hoping he never gets so busy with B-movie heroics that he gives up oddball comic roles entirely. ) The story goes that John"s father BJ (Ken Foree) was so impressed with his infant son"s grip on his finger that he named him for the folk hero. Now confined to a wheelchair and living alone with John, the older man lives in memories of his Casanova prime — "my dick is legendary! " he tells us twice — and awaits the occasion when he can live vicariously through his son"s feats. John, though, is intent on avoiding conflict. Home movies show us that he ran with a tough crowd as a teen; but he became reclusive after a traumatic incident, and now he won"t even touch a gun if it"s handed to him. But across the neighborhood, a crew of broadly-drawn bad guys are about to force him to once again engage with a violent world. We meet four of them in an ugly, unconvincing depiction of their downtime: Four thugs sit in identical white track suits, playing dominoes, their dialogue thick with epithets that can"t be reprinted; on a nearby couch sit a few young women so doped they can hardly sit up. The cheesy pimps-and-hos scene-setting gets no more credible once we see how the gang abducts women at random off the street, nor when we see the man they work for: A cold dude named Hell (Ludacris, with none of the swagger he"s shown elsewhere), who has some kind of disfigurement on his jaw that he covers with a long metal plate. (It"s the sort of bling, perhaps, worn by a man who identifies with Doctor Doom. ) After a botched rescue attempt in which several of Hell"s men are killed, one captive, Berta (Jamila Velazquez), hides from pursuers under the Henrys" front porch. John takes her in against the advice of BJ, who knows Hell will keep hunting her — and that the baggage John has with Hell won"t make the inevitable conflict easier. The film focuses now on both John"s protective bonding with Berta, a Honduran who has fled violent gangs in her home country, and on his search for a peaceful resolution with the ganglord we come to understand is his cousin. Crews makes it clear that John has a weight on his conscience, that he"s PTSD-struck and sad, but the script gives him little to work with. In a chance encounter with an old schoolmate (Kimberly Hebert Gregory) who"s clearly attracted to him and wants to know more, he can only explain himself with, "I never had much to say. " More than other similar films, one named John Henry will of course be building toward a classical test of its protagonist"s mettle. Composing his own score, Forbes starts copping heavily from Kill Bill as he sends John into the fray, but the action is unsatisfying even if it"s not compared to the original Henry"s feats. It turns out it"s possible to vanquish evil and save the innocent without inspiring generations to sing of your legend. Producers behind the Terry Crews micro-budget drama “ John Henry ” are taking a victory lap this week, as their film has found an exhilarating second life and wide viewership on Netflix. In a period that saw dominance from the second season of the Christina Applegate series “Dead to Me, ” and stiff feature competition from the Michelle Obama documentary “Becoming” and the continued reign of Chris Hemsworth’s “Extraction, ” the Crews film stood tallest — rating as the number one movie on Netflix this Wednesday, according to the platform’s own top ten list. “John Henry” comes from debut writer-director Will Forbes, and producers Maurice Fadida, Eric B. Fleischman and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones. UTA Independent Film Group sold the project to L. A. -based Saban Films last year, which bowed in a quiet limited theatrical run in January. Early this week, Fadida and Fleischman noticed only in browsing the Netflix app that their film had become available. Then the messages started pouring in. “It’s common that the distributor will release the film to SVOD and not notify you immediately. But then people started texting us saying, ‘Hey, you’re number five! Number two! Number one! ” Fleischman told Variety, admitting he and Fadida were “baffled. ” The project is based on the John Henry of folklore, an African American man known for his incredible strength. Many versions of the story, interpreted most often in music and literature, have been told since the 1800s at the birth of the American railroads. Henry was said to have been more adept at hammering steel than any machine, and the tool became his symbol. Crews plays a character inspired by, or perhaps an emotional “descendant” of, the mythical John Henry, producers said. Crews’ Henry had a violent gang life in his youth in South Central Los Angeles, only to swear it off and internalize his intense well of strength as an adult. A gang kingpin played by Ludacris has different ideas. Fleischman met Forbes, a composer by trade, while he was still in school and developing this world. Fadida said Forbes insisted on authenticity, and “brought his friends from the hood to set certain scenes, because he wanted the realest real. ” Judging by social media reactions, the film brings an authentic grit and an unexpectedly subdued turn from Crews. “Ultimately, if we were to distill the success, the movie is entertaining for a broad scope of people. I think that’s why it rushed to the top, ” said Fleischman. Both producers, Fadida of Kodiak Pictures and Fleischman of Defiant Studios, find the success encouraging as indie filmmakers. That a film like “John Henry” could achieve such heights proves that Netflix can be a place of discovery for titles not fronted by Marvel stars and premium budgets, with over 182 million subscribers worldwide to boot, they said. “We were very happy to see this platform democratized. We are not a Netflix original, and this was a micro-budget movie with zero marketing dollars behind it, ” said Fadida. The pair were meant to take the film to Cannes before the coronavirus pandemic hit and seek foreign buyers, as Saban only took North American rights on the property. Given its success on Netflix, it is feasible the streamer could scoop up worldwide rights and dub the film for its global audience — though an interesting wrench comes in the form of a parallel project the studio is developing with Dwayne Johnson. Announced in the fall of 2018, Johnson and his “Jumanji” director Jake Kasdan have a take on the character called “John Henry and the Statesmen, ” which aims to be a franchise starter populated with folklore characters. News that Johnson would himself play John Henry was met with backlash, given the character is a dark-skinned black man. “A lot of the positive comments have been about Terry playing a dramatic role that he normally wouldn’t play, ” Fleischman noted, “and from a cultural perspective, him being the correct casting for John Henry instead of someone like The Rock. ” Representatives for Johnson did not immediately return Variety ‘s request for comment. Netflix did not immediately comment on exploring worldwide rights on Forbes’ film. Given their overwhelming week, the producers said sequel talks with Forbes have yet to take shape though they can easily see “a world where John Henry’s hammer goes on. ” The men were set to reunite on the thriller “The Knocking, ” whose start date has been pushed due to COVID-19. At the Cannes virtual market this year, they’ll also sell the would-be SXSW 2020 player “Witch Hunt, ” and the genre thriller “Phobias. ”.
